Our Yurlu – Our Country

Nyamal Country (Yurlu) is in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia, south-east of Port Hedland. Our neighbours are the Kariyarra People to the west, Ngarla to the north, Martu, Nyangumarta, Warnman and Pijikarli people to the east, and Palyku and Nyiyaparli to the south.
Nyamal Country takes in most of the De Grey River Catchment, other than its headwaters wuluyu (south) in Palyku and Nyiyaparli Country, and about 65km wartalpa (north), going to the sea in Ngarla Country. The major tributaries across Nyamal Country include the Oakover, Nullagine, Coongan, Strelley, Shaw and Turner Rivers. Nyamal Country is bounded at the east by Jingkarn (the Gregory Range) beyond which are the sand dunes of the Great Sandy Desert.

Main Landscapes

Nyamal Country includes a few main landscapes. These are featured across much of our Yurlu.

  • Broad sandplains covered in grasses (Spinifex and other tussock grasses) and low shrubs (Acacia spp.) and occasional granite outcrops and low hills.
  • Flood plains and riverine ecosystems lined with paperbark, cadjeput, river red gum, coolibah and white dragon trees and tussock grasses.
  • Hilly Country with rocky hills and ranges covered in spinifex and snappy gum woodlands, with gorges, extensive deep waterholes.
