Welcome to
Nyamal Country

We are the Nyamal Native Title holders of Our Yurlu (Our Country).

What does
Nyamal mean?

‘Nyamal’ refers to where we are from, who we are, how we do things and the words we’ve been given – all passed down from our ancestors since time immemorial.

Nyamal is our language, land, law and people. Our Vision is for Nyamal Community to work together on Country for healthy land, water, animals, culture, language and livelihoods making healthy people – young and old.

Our Story

NYAMAL is the land

NYAMAL is the people

NYAMAL is the law– our traditional ways

NYAMAL is the language passed down to us

Ngayarta
Nyamal People

Nyamal people have been here since the kapukarri (dreamtime) when the manguny (ancestral beings) created the physical features of the land, put the Nyamal people and language in the land, and laid down the laws to govern the ngayarta (people) and how we behave. Our Country is alive with the spirits of our ancestors and of our manguny. They inhabit the land and watch and interact with ngayarta when we are on Country.

“… manguny left something for us… like whitefella got a paper… manguny mili… That’s Nyamal Law, you can’t shift it… it’s in the Country… I know the manguny law we sing it.”

- Peter Coppin, 2004 (CR)

Native title
Determination

In 2019, the Federal Court recognised our Native Title rights over nearly 30,000 square kilometres of our Country (Ngura).

We formed the Nyamal Aboriginal Corporation (ICN 8770) as a Registered Native Title Body Corporate to hold our native title rights and interests in trust. NAC is pivotal in progressing the broader interests of the Nyamal People and in representing us in our dealings with all other parties including governments, researchers and private industry.

In 2024, another Native Title determination recognised Nyamal Native Title rights over an additional 4,000sqkm.

Keeping Culture
Strong

We are proud of our strong knowledge and culture. The laws and customs that were given to us by the manguny connect us to our Country and they are held strong within the Nyamal community today. Hunting and gathering in the old way are very important to us. Keeping culture strong now and for all future generations is our ongoing responsibility.
