Indigenous Protected Area

Nyamal are in the process of establishing an Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) that will cover Purungunya and almost 3,500 square kilometres of surrounding unallocated crown land (UCL). This follows an announcement of 9 new Indigenous Protected Areas by the Federal Government in July 2024, paving the way into protecting and managing Nyamal cultural heritage. This means Nyamal land will be directly managed by Nyamal Traditional Owners, including Indigenous rangers, who will be dedicated to safeguarding cultural heritage and biodiversity, including threatened species.

An IPA provides Nyamal with an opportunity for long-term ranger operations that help protect and care for the things that are important for Nyamal People. The Pilbara, rich in cultural and environmental values, currently offers limited employment opportunities outside the mining sector. An IPA will provide Nyamal women and men with alternative, meaningful employment in land and water management ensuring our People get the opportunity to work on-Country and maintain their connection with Nyamal culture.
