Native Title

In 2019 and again in 2024, the Federal Court recognised Nyamal Native Title rights for over nearly 35,000 square kilometres of our Country (Yurlu) in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It was officially recognised at Shaw River, about 100km east of Port Hedland.

At the Nyamal Native Title Determination, Doris Eaton, Nyamal Traditional Owner, said:

“Today we had our determination on this beautiful river… And I am so, so happy and proud. I’d like to grab the moon and bring the moon… You don’t know how I feel inside.

It’s been a hard journey, hard work from some elders that passed away… And I hope our next generation carry on, work, this journey… Our Nation come together, for the benefit of our young generation.”

The first claim for Native Title was submitted by Nyamal Traditional Owners in 1994 – two years after the ground-breaking Eddie Mabo case was won in the High Court.
